On this guided wet-walk led by an Institute Naturalist, the experience begins at the Oasis Visitor Center, where participants receive a walking stick and a brief introduction before setting out on foot directly from the visitor center.
Wade through marl prairie and cypress forest habitats while experiencing Big Cypress up close. Along the way, observe alligators, birds, air plants, and other wildlife while learning how subtle changes in elevation, water depth, and water flow shape this remarkable ecosystem.
Led by an experienced Institute Naturalist, the wet-walk emphasizes close-up natural history, hands-on exploration, and expert interpretation in an intimate group setting.

This Big Cypress National Preserve tour begins at the Oasis Visitor Center located at 52105 Tamiami Trl E, Ochopee, FL 34141.
Upon arrival, please check-in with your Institute Naturalist by the flagpole outside of the Oasis Visitor Center. Please arrive 15 minutes before departure.

- Check in at the Oasis Visitor Center and meet your Institute Naturalist.
- Begin with a brief introduction and overview of the wet-walk at the visitor center.
- Take a short walk directly from the visitor center to the starting point of the wet-walk.
- Enjoy a two-hour guided wet-walk through the marl prairie and cypress strands with an experienced Naturalist. Discover the unique plants, wildlife, and natural processes that make Big Cypress National Preserve such a special ecosystem.
- The wet-walk concludes with a walk back to the Oasis Visitor Center.

- Participants must be at least 12 years old and at least 54 inches (137.16 cm) tall.
- Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
- Proper attire is required: long pants, long socks and fully covered lace-up shoes/sneakers.

Where does this trip take place?
Your Naturalist will choose a site within the cypress ecosystem based on current conditions like water levels and wildlife activity. The specific location will be shared when you check in for your tour.
What should I do with my phone, keys, or valuables?
You may bring them at your own risk. We strongly recommend using a dry bag or leaving valuables secured in your vehicle.
What kind of wildlife might I see?
While sightings aren’t guaranteed, we often see birds, fish, aquatic insects, and a variety of wetland plants. The focus is on immersion in the ecosystem rather than on wildlife encounters.
Is this experience safe?
Safety is our top priority. While any outdoor adventure carries some risk, wildlife encounters are rare. Your Naturalist is trained in safety protocols, carries a radio, and has a first aid kit on hand. If you have concerns, feel free to call us at (786) 465-4058.
What should I wear or bring?
Wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet and clothes you don’t mind getting muddy. We also recommend: -A change of clothes for after the slog -Bug protection (repellent, long sleeves, etc.) -Water and snacks -A towel and dry bag
What should I wear?
Guests must wear long pants and closed-toe, lace-up shoes for this experience. We also recommend: -Long sleeves and long socks for extra comfort and protection -Slippers or flip-flops to change into after the walk (your shoes and socks will get wet)
